Rita MacNeil
(May 28, 1944 – April 16, 2013)

We had a really difficult time with the passing of Cape Breton’s First Lady of Song: Rita MacNeil. She was an inspiration to us and we actually felt like we knew her. You know when you think you are friends with a celebrity but you really aren’t? (hope that’s not just us sounding crazy…people do that right?). Well we considered her a friend and part of our blogging family. Laura, Robin and Rita. Just like Three’s Company or Charlie’s Angels only very, very different.

As many of our zillions of die hard fans know, we haven’t been blogging much lately. It’s hard, when the face of your blog passes away – how do you continue on? We’ve thought long and hard about it and we’ve decided that Rita would have wanted us to go on. How do we know this? Well in all honesty we don’t, but we did think we were friends with her so let us think this too okay?

Here are some of our favourite things about Rita.

1. Rita MacNeil was a feminist. Not just because she was a female. You know you can be a feminist even if you aren’t female. Get your head outta the clouds. The RCMP actually spied on her and a bunch of other female activists in the 1970’s to try to understand the new generation of women who shunned traditional female roles and fought for for equal pay, sex education in schools and access to abortion. Go RITA!!! Read more about this here.

2. She was on an episode of Trailer Park Boys

3. She had a fondness for oversized hats. SO DO WE RITA!!!

4. Rita drove a Nissan Cube. You know that car that kind of looks like a refrigerator.

5. Rita made her family laugh even after her passing. In her will she wrote, “Upon my death, I would want to be cremated immediately, my ashes to be placed in my tea room teapot. Two, if necessary,”.

Her daughter Laura Lewis said, “My mom loved to laugh and she had a wonderful sense of humour. She showed us that humour and laughter is a wonderful coping mechanism in hard times.”

WE TOTALLY AGREE RITA!!!! With that being said, the blog must go on!!

Thank you Rita for all that you have done. You are missed every single day.

Rita MacNeil dead copy

It is with heavy hearts that we share the news that the our beloved Canadian icon and friend, Rita MacNeil has passed away.  She died following complications to surgery.

As you all know Rita has been somewhat of a mascot on our blog.  We chose her because we wanted to use a Canadian icon that everyone knew and loved, and boy did we choose right.  She has brought nothing but joy, laughter and beautiful music to our lives.

Please stay tuned for our tribute to the lovely and talented, Rita MacNeil.

Thanks Jenelle for this one!

Clever ad.  Clever indeed.

The Rankin Family tells us this is thier new favourite band and song!

This is hilarious.

Recently we got a very angry email from one member of the Rankin family. He told us how disappointed they were that we had decided to employ such Canadian icons as Rita MacNeil and Anne Murray but hadn’t asked them to take part in our explosively popular blog.  So they pitched us an idea that we thought was great.  They would like to provide us with an interesting, funny or unique  youtube video every day.  We all know how lazy the Rankin family can be though (no offense guys)  so don’t actually expect one every day. Maybe once a month.

Our world is filled with some pretty amazing people. I can name atleast 5.  Nelson Mandela, Matt Damon, Laura Stradiotto, Robin McNicoll and James Franco.  Unfortunately we are also surrounded by quite a few douches.  If you look up douche in the dictionary the face of two men will appear.  Chad Kroeger and Nicolas Cage are captains of the douche factory.  We’ve already interviewed Chad so now we’ve decided to see how Nic would answer our celebrity interview.

Nicolas Cage was born on January 7, 1964 and since his mom was unable to stuff him back in he started his douche quest. I’ve always wondered how this incredibly unfortunate looking man with no substance made it into the entertainment business.  I’ve asked experts like David Suzuki, Bill Nye the Science Guy and Antoine Dodson and they all said they don’t really know, fo’ real!  Then I wikipedia’d him and found out that his uncle is  Francis Ford Coppola.  Sooo….maybe that’s how?  I don’t know that’s still a stretch.

See Nic’s answers to our interview below. *Note all answers are based on a true story

1) What is your favourite 90’s sitcom?
I liked that commercial with the guy that everyone thought ate too many chocolate bars.
That’s a commercial.
Ya but he didn’t even eat a lot of chocolate bars, he just had acne.

2) Do you own any music by Rita MacNeil?
I banged her and by Rita I mean this 19 year old girl that I knocked up and married.  I’m so great.

3) Do you have any nicknames?
Substancetard, Dumb ass mo fo, Kim, Copolladouche and my mom called me Nancy but that was before the change to my no no parts.

4) Do you have a favourite youtube video? If so, what?

My mom says I’m pretty.

Holy Smokes!! What the crunk!?  We just landed ourselves another celebrity inteview. What the grill!  Our latest interview is with the great Canadian crunk band Sans Serif.  The band consists of these crazy cats: Stu Ron Hubbard, Peter Chipman, Stephanie Gora, Jason Meisner, Jeremy Toma, Jack Dalziel & Rachel Wise.  If you don’t know Sans Serif, you probably don’t even know what colour pants your wore yesterday or maybe you didn’t even wear pants.  Seriously you should know this band.  Your life will probably change just by listening to their music. Before I started listening to Sans Serif I seriously hated roasted peppers…now they are a regular part of my daily diet. I am absolutely certain that I have Sans Serif to thank for my new found love of roasted peppers.  Check them out here grab a plate of vegetables you think you hate and read our interview.

1) What is your favourite 90’s sitcom?
I would definitely have to go with newsradio. even the last season without phil hartman is really good (especially since jon lovitz had already played something like 2 different characters on the show). and somehow andy dick is really funny in it. plus maura tierney’s kind of a babe.

2) Do you own any music by Rita MacNeil?
No. but we do have a copy of the barbara striesand album ‘superman’ up on our wall: http://www.allmusic.com/album/streisand-superman-r26528

3) Do you have any nicknames?
Sometimes we refer to jeremy as jerome. other times we just call him a jerk. actually, he’s alright (though not single… sorry ladies).

4) Do you have a favourite youtube video?  If so, what?
Recently i’ve been watching celebrity autobiography on youtube. it’s where comedians read excerpts from quintessential celebrity autobiographies.  here’s one featuring the early poems of suzanne somers

5) Do you have a favorite hat? If so please describe or send us a photo of you wearing said hat.
Sometimes peter wears a robot hat. well really it’s more like a mask/helmet. we really haven’t gotten past robots yet. we totally missed the whole vampire thing, and now we’re way behind this zombie craze.  maybe we can catch up in time for the next fad. i’m crossing my fingers it will have something to do with tony danza.

6) Do you have any hidden talents? If so, please describe, or send us a
video of you demonstrating said talent.
I don’t know about hidden talents, but here are some sans serif secrets (all completely true): steph sings better after eating salt and vinegar chips; jason has taken boudoir photographs of himself (he may be sprawled on top of a fish tank); jack thinks everything went downhill after the blue jays won the world series in 1993; rachel’s cat hasn’t learnt to play fight yet, so i get cuts all over my hands.

I’m pretty sure this band is my band sibling from another mother.  Thanks for the response guys!!

Our latest interview is with Rick Campanelli.  Rick is known nowadays for his work on ET Canada.  If you are like me you remember him as Rick the Temp from Much Music.  He is not very tall, but he had very strong and bountiful answers to one of my questions.  The rest I’ve answered for him since I think I know him pretty well.  I met him years ago on the set of Much Music. I hung out with him and Pauly Shore for probably more than 64 seconds!

1) What is your favourite 90’s sitcom?
**ACTUAL ANSWER
Seinfeld.

2) Do you own any music by Rita MacNeil?
*this is what I think he’d say.
Rita and I used to date. I used to own every one of her albums.  When she broke my heart I had to burn all of them because it hurt me too much to have them around.

3) Do you have any nicknames?
*this is what I think he’d say.
Rick the Temp, Rick Campandspaghetti, Kung Fu Kitty, Candy Sass

4) Do you have a favorite hat? If so please describe or send us a photo of you wearing said hat
*this is what I think he’d say.
I prefer helmets over hats. Helmets are where it’s at.  I got this one for my birthday

5) Do you have any hidden talents? If so, please describe, or send us a video of you demonstrating said talent.
*this is what I think he’d say.
During breaks on our show I entertain our cast and crew with various magic tricks.  I can also devour the tail of a lizard in 7 seconds flat, no lie.

6) Do you have a favourite youtube video? If so, what?
*this is what I think he’d like.
